Year In Review: 2022 Highlights from the Pardee School

In 2022, Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies went through numerous big changes, welcomed new members to our community, and set the stage for a period of substantial progress as we approach our second decade as stewards of global studies education at BU. As the New Year approaches, we want to highlight some of the biggest stories and moments from the year.

New Pardee School Dean, Scott Taylor, Appointed

On August 31, 2022, Boston University Provost and Chief Academic Officer Jean Morrison announced that Dr. Scott Taylor was selected as the next Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies. Taylor is among our nation’s most respected scholars in African politics and political economy, with a particular focus on business-state relations, private sector development, governance, and political and economic reform. Prior to coming to BU, he was a Professor and Vice Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, the top-ranked professional school in international affairs. Taylor spent over two decades as a member of the Georgetown University faculty, including 13 years as director of the school’s African Studies Program. Pardee School Faculty Release Eight Books

The Pardee School’s faculty produced a great deal of impactful and insightful research this year. From the global economy to modern China, and immigration policy to “the post-truth era,“ our faculty continue to contribute to the ever-expanding fields of global studies. This year’s faculty book releases are as follows:

Pardee School Partners with State Department on Alliance for Afghan Women’s Economic Resilience

On September 20, 2022, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the Alliance for Afghan Women’s Economic Resilience, a public-private partnership between the United States State Department and the Pardee School that aims to promote the economic rights and well-being of Afghan women. Rachel Brulé, Pardee School Assistant Professor of Global Development Policy, is the primary architect of this project. In a memo to BU leadership, she states “BU’s Pardee School, its faculty, and its students will have the unique opportunity of playing a leading role in a high-visibility public-private partnership to advance economic gender equality in one of the world’s most challenging countries for women: Afghanistan.” The full story can be read below.

Leadership Changes at the Pardee School and its Affiliated Centers

On May 18,  Adil Najam, Dean Emeritus and Pardee School Professor of International Relations and Earth and Environment, announced that Robert Hefner, Pardee School Professor of Anthropology and International Relations, and Ambassador Mark Storella, Pardee School Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy, have been named Directors of the School’s African Studies Center (ASC) and Center for the Study of Asia (CSA) respectively. On August 15, Timothy Longman, Pardee School Professor of International Relations and Political Science and Director of the Institute on Culture, Religion and World Affairs (CURA), was appointed Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Pardee School. The full story can be read below.

Rounding out the year of leadership changes, Jorge Heine was named Interim Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future effective January 1, 2023. That announcement can be read below.

New Faculty and Staff Join the Pardee School

The Pardee School graciously welcomed Zachary Mondesire, Assistant Professor of International Relations, as a new member of the faculty beginning Fall 2022. Mondesire’s research focuses on the intersection of race, gender, and religion in Africa as well as the institutional legacy of Pan-Africanism. His teaching addresses global ideas about social, economic, and political justice. The full announcement can be read below. 

Zachary Mondesire Joins Pardee School Faculty

The School also made hires in its Student Affairs and Services team and the Center for the Study of Asia (CSA). Katherine Taylor is serving as the Director of Student Affairs and Services; Sophia Gish and Lauren Thams also joined the team as Senior Undergraduate Advisors. Through holistic academic advising, faculty mentoring, as well as curricular and co-curricular initiatives, the department encourages students to explore their interests and pursue opportunities that expand their worldview.

Dr. Maria Elena P. Rivera-Beckstrom joined the CSA as its Assistant Director in November. A longtime academic with extensive research publications under her belt, she brings a wealth of administrative experience and vision to the Center. Read these stories below.

Pardee School Founding Benefactor Frederick S. Pardee (Questrom ’54, Hon.’06) Passes Awar

The visionary founding inspiration and benefactor of the Pardee School, and before that the Pardee Center, passed away in Los Angeles on June 27 at 90. Apart from the Pardee School and the Pardee Center, his name also adorns the Frederick S. Pardee Management Library at the BU Questrom School of Business. An economist, a real estate investor, and a thoughtful philanthropist, he leaves a deep and truly transformational imprint across Boston University and the many other institutions he supported across the US and internationally.

The Pardee School hosted a memorial event for Fred Pardee on October 4. During this celebration of his life, friends, family, and colleagues came together to memorialize Mr. Pardee’s life, celebrate the School community made possible through his generosity, and recognize the impact he had on Boston University. Adil Najam, Dean Scott Taylor, BU President Robert Brown, and Provost Jean Morrison spoke of Pardee’s legacy at the University and what the future holds for the school bearing his name.
