Heine Interviewed on War in Ukraine, Latin America, and Active Non-Alignment
In an interview with Radio France International (RFI), Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and Interim Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, discussed the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war and the Latin American perspective on the conflict.
The article, titled “Latinoamérica y el ‘no alineamiento activo’ en la guerra de Ucrania (Latin America and the ‘active non-alignment‘ in the war in Ukraine),” explores why despite their repeated condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Latin American countries are not actively taking sides in the conflict or getting involved by providing arms. According to Heine, this reflects the regional adoption of “active non-alignment,” meaning Latin American countries are not taking sides with great powers but rather focusing on themselves.
