Heine Interviewed on China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Latin America

On May 23, 2023, Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and Interim Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, joined The Heat, CGTN America’s prime time talk show, for an interview on their segment “Ten Years of the Belt and Road Initiative.” The segment features three experts who discuss how far China’s Belt and Road Initiative has come in the past ten years.

Professor Heine was the Ambassador of Chile to China starting in 2014, a year after the Belt and Road Initiative commenced, and was able to observe how it evolved. What started as a way to guarantee China’s connection with the world, expanded into a worldwide effort to connect countries and advance the world’s infrastructure. China approached this initiative with a different perception of developing nations – they established infrastructure and connectivity. This has helped reshape many Latin American countries- with 22 out of 33 countries being on board with the initiative.
