Heine Discusses Belt and Road Initiative’s Global Impact

Amb. Jorge Heine

Amb. Jorge Heine, Research Professor at Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies and Interim Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, participated in a panel discussion featured on The Heat, CGTN America’s flagship talkshow, on ten years of China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Heine underlined the BRI’s remarkable success, citing over $1.9 trillion in increased trade and a remarkable 6.4% growth rate over the past decade. He emphasized how the BRI has redefined the conventional model of development, offering a politically and ideologically unconstrained alternative to Western institutions like the IMF and World Bank, particularly for global South nations.

Furthermore, Heine discussed the BRI’s role in addressing infrastructure gaps in developing countries, transforming economic development and trade. He drew a sharp contrast between China’s technology-sharing approach and the U.S.’s stance on intellectual property, underscoring the significance of IP in future global influence and prosperity. He also shed light on the BRICS Plus framework and the changing global landscape, with the global South rising and the influence of traditional Western powers waning.

In essence, Heine’s interview on “The Heat” unveiled the BRI’s pivotal role in shaping global development in an alternative, empowering, and infrastructure-focused manner.
