Dean Emeritus and Professor Adil Najam

Professor Adil Najam, Dean Emeritus and Professor at Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies, recently appeared on Bulgarian National Television’s flagship news show, Panorama, during his visit to Bulgaria for the Leadership Summit of the European Broadcasting Union.

In the interview, conducted in English and translated into Bulgarian, Najam shared his insights on climate change, emphasizing the urgency of action and the role of human responsibility in both causing and potentially solving the climate crisis.

“The good news is that if climate change is caused by humans, it can be stopped by humans,” Najam stated, highlighting a key message of hope amidst the challenges of global warming. He stressed the importance of recognizing our connection to nature, saying, “Nature is everywhere. You are part of nature.”

Najam also addressed the complex relationship between development and environmental protection, particularly in the context of developing nations. He called for a new approach to progress, stating, “The goal of every country should be prosperity for everyone, every country, every community, every individual.”

Najam emphasized the critical role of leadership in addressing climate change, noting, “I can’t imagine a moment when leadership has been more necessary than now.” He also discussed the evolving responsibilities of journalism in the era of climate change and social media, urging for more in-depth reporting on these complex issues.

Water scarcity was another topic of discussion, with Najam expressing hope that water would not become “the new gold,” leading to conflict. Instead, he advocated for equitable access to this essential resource.
