Ambassador Vesko Garcević participates in political TV show “The Context”

Ambassador Vesko Garcević, Professor at Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies, participated in the political TV show The Context on February 19th. The show Global Tectonic Changes: the Return of Realpolitik addressed President Trump’s foreign policy and the US global posture. In addition to Ambassador Garcević, the show featured Aaron Mate, journalist and author, and Mirko Dautović, foreign policy analyst and lecturer at Webster University in Tashkent.
During the conversation, they raised the question of whether, in an increasingly volatile world, the global powers are turning to the concept of early 20th-century realpolitik. Several signs confirm it – the US zero-sum approach to international crises, including the Middle East; Washington’s recognition of the Russian sphere of influence in Eastern Europe and the tough stance on Ukraine; the US administration’s dissonant rhetoric with the European allies, etc.
Commenting on the US/EU relations, Garčević pointed out that The Euro-Atlantic bond has never appeared more fractured than it is now. As Washington has demonstrated almost every day since January 20, the priorities of its traditional allies are not of US interest anymore. Worse, many European allies are perceived by the current Washington administration as the sole opponent of their vision of the global order. The time after a potential US-Russian ceasefire agreement will be marked by a volatile, unstable multipolarity in Europe, in which the EU is expected to take responsibility for the deal it didn’t fully participate in. The increased instability will likely expedite their plans to build more robust defense capabilities, including nuclear deterrence.
Ambassador Vesko Garčević dealt with issues pertinent to European security and NATO for almost 14 years during his diplomatic career. In 2004, he was posted in Vienna to serve as Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. He was Montenegro’s Ambassador to NATO from 2010 until 2014 and served as Montenegro’s National Coordinator for NATO from 2015 until he joined the faculty at the Pardee School.
