Expert on Call – Interactive Career Conversations
After the initial successful launch in February, Pardee Career Services hosted another insightful session of Expert on Call on Friday, March 28, 2025, an interactive career chat designed to help students explore career paths in international relations. This month’s featured expert, Eric Siriprakorn (Pardee BA ‘06), shared his experiences navigating the fields of government contracting, intelligence analysis, and consulting. Currently serving as a Proposal Strategy Specialist at Booz Allen Hamilton, Siriprakorn offered candid insights into the realities of working in national security and the broader consulting industry.
Key Takeaways from the Conversation:
- The Non-Linear Career Path
Siriprakorn’s journey illustrates how career paths are rarely linear. He initially pursued government roles but ultimately found his niche in consulting, where he could contribute meaningfully to national security efforts. His story underscored the importance of remaining open to different opportunities and adapting to industry realities. - Understanding Government Contracting
Using a relatable analogy, Siriprakorn described government contracting as similar to a landlord hiring a contractor to fix a broken window—but on a much larger scale. He explained that many essential government functions are outsourced to private firms, making contracting a critical sector for those interested in public service. - Exploring Career Options and Avoiding the ‘Dream Job’ Myth
He advised students not to stress about landing their dream job right away. Instead, early-career roles should be viewed as opportunities to gain experience, build skills, and refine career interests. Whether working in think tanks, NGOs, or government, exposure to various roles is key. - Hiring Realities and Decision-Making
Having been a hiring manager himself, Siriprakorn emphasized that while strong qualifications get candidates in the door, hiring decisions are influenced by a range of factors—sometimes beyond a candidate’s control. He encouraged students to focus on skill-building rather than waiting indefinitely for the “perfect” opportunity. - Advice on Federal vs. Private Sector Jobs
When asked if students should wait for federal government opportunities or pursue private-sector opportunities, his advice was clear: Do not wait. The hiring process for government roles is unpredictable and lengthy, especially during this time of uncertainty. Taking a role in the private sector can provide valuable skills and experience that may later enhance federal job prospects.
