Joseph Fewsmith, Professor of International Relations and Political Science at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, said that criticism of Chinese President Xi Jinping in the wake of the Tianjin explosions is unprecedented.

Fewsmith spoke about the state of the Chinese government in an indepth interview with Jeremy Hobson on WBUR’s Here and Now, in a August 17 segment entitled “How Firm is the Grasp of Chinese Government?”

From the interview:

“The U. S.-China relationship is full of tension right now,” Fewsmith said. “Xi Jinping is really trying to assert himself, both domestically and internationally. He may be in power for a long time.”
