PGC Hosts Lori for Book Talk on Offshore Citizens
The Pardee Graduate Council (PGC), the official graduate student organization of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted Noora Lori, Pardee School Assistant Professor of International Relations, for a discussion on her new book on November 21, 2019 as a part of the PGC Brown Bag Series.
Lori discussed Offshore Citizens: Permanent Temporary Status in the Gulf (Cambridge University Press, 2019) and covered a range of topics including why states postpone access to citizenship, and how people navigate waiting for a secure legal status for decades at a time.
Lori argued that states postpone incorporation and use temporary status as a strategic means to evade larger dilemmas about belonging, a strategy that allows states to postpone these questions to a later, unidentified time.
The PGC organizes a variety of activities aimed at enriching graduate student life at the Pardee School including discussions with Pardee School faculty, film screenings and social events. Most recently, the PGC organized a “Kindness Week” at the Pardee School to encourage small and large acts of kindness around campus.
