Heine Quoted in FT on Chile’s COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout
Ambassador Jorge Heine, Research Professor at the Pardee School, was quoted in a recent Financial Times article discussing Chile’s administration of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The article, titled “Chile powers ahead in Covid-19 vaccination race,” quickly points out that “the country [is] one of the frontrunners in the global scramble for vaccines on a per capita basis.” Heine attributes this quick vaccine acquisition and rollout to Chile’s positive relations with countries around the world and the its numerous free trade agreements.
Many of Chile’s vaccines were acquired from China – the countries biggest trading partner – which Heine previously applauded, hoping it would help the country pull through this crisis with renewed vigor. He goes on to state, “I hope that other countries learn something from this, and realise that [it helps] if you go out and buy the best you can get for the best price, and don’t have ideological blinkers.”
