Mako Discusses Her Research and New Book on SEPADPod

Shamiran Mako, Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, appeared as a guest on the Richardson Institute’s Sectarianism, Proxies, and De-Sectarianization Podcast where she discussed her latest book After the Arab Uprisings: Progress and Stagnation in the Middle East and North Africa

In this episode of the SEPADPod, Mako discusses her work on Iraq, a special issue of the Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding – titled “Building Sustainable Peace in Iraq” – that she guest-edited, as well as her new book. In her remarks, Mako touches on her interest in “the State,” her academic journey, as well as what has motivated current research.

Shamiran Mako is an assistant professor of international relations at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University. She is also a member of the Graduate Faculty at the Political Science Department at Boston University. Her research explores the historical and contemporary drivers of inter and intra-state conflicts that produce weak and fragile states across the MENA region. She is the author of After the Uprisings: Progress and Stagnation in the Middle East and North Africa, with Valentine Moghadam (forthcoming June 2021).
