Body, Mind, Space, and Spirit: Margaret Rigg Art Collection

  • Starts: 8:00 am on Sunday, March 14, 2021
  • Ends: 5:00 pm on Sunday, March 14, 2021
Free your mind, body, and spirit through viewing these artworks in the Margaret Rigg collection. Learn through design and color the beauty that comes from adversity during difficult times like those we currently find ourselves experiencing today. Works in this exhibition are from the Margaret Rigg Art Collection and date back to the late 1950s and 1960s. The works explore theological themes like crucifixion, la pieta, and the holiness of the body through the lens of the beginning of the Cold War and the burgeoning military-industrial complex. The Rigg collection came to us thanks to Dr. Ada Focer (STH PhD, 2016), as she studied the Methodist Student Movement for her dissertation. The movement was the driving force behind the publication, motive magazine. Margaret Rigg brought these artworks around to schools, Sunday Schools, and other groups of children to share how art and theology intersect. The media, choice of colors, and, at times, harsh subject matter, reflect the turbulent times of the late 1950s and 1960s. This exhibition can be viewed from anywhere by anyone at this website https://butheoartsgallery2020.wordpress.com/ Alternatively, Boston University students, faculty, and staff may view the works in person at the School of Theology Library at 745 Commonwealth Avenue, 2nd, Boston, MA 02215. The library is open Monday-Thursday 8AM-8PM, Fridays 8AM-4PM, and Saturdays 10AM-4PM.
