First Year Events

What is FYSOP?

The First Year Student Outreach Project is a unique opportunity for incoming students to get settled in their new community by performing a week of service before classes begin. Volunteers move into their residences early, participate in a program orientation, a full day of education, and three full days of direct service in a specific issue area with other incoming students and current-student staff leaders. Many students say it is one of their fondest memories as a BU student. Please visit the Community Service Center website for more information about FYSOP.

What is Matriculation?

New Student Matriculation is a ceremony where the President, University staff and administrators officially welcome new students into the Boston University community. Other than Commencement, this is the only time when an entire class will collectively be together. The ceremony usually takes place in Agganis Arena during the Move-In Period. Parents and family members are welcome to attend.

When is Family and Friends Weekend?

Family and Friends Weekend typically takes place the third weekend in October, which is also the same weekend as the Head of the Charles Regatta – one of the biggest Regattas in the world.

Where can I view a schedule of Family and Friends Weekend events?

A schedule of Family and Friends Weekend events will be available to view once the fall semester is underway. You can also find out details on how to register for Family and Friends Weekend and purchase tickets for specific events here.

Is housing offered for parents during Family and Friends Weekend? If not, where can I find a list of area hotels?

Housing is not offered for parents during Family and Friends Weekend because all the residence halls are occupied by students. A general list of hotels near campus can be found here.
