Two Selections of the Dial Permanent Library
The Short Novels of Dostoevsky
With an Introduction and Critical Estimate
By
THOMAS MANN
Dostoevsky's short novels are out of print and have not been
available for many years. To fill this gap, we have collected in
this volume
six
of
the master craftsman's short novels which
demonstrate the wide range of his magnificent genius and show
him in a variety of moods.
Dostoevsky has literally projected himself into the minds of his
characters and has stolen from them their most jealously guarded
and intimate secrets. In his short novels, the passions of men and
women are dissected with the sharpness and clarity of a master
surgeon. For sheer reading enjoyment, THE SHORT NovELS OF
DosTOEVSKY is a volume beyond compare. Says Thomas Mann
in his introduction: "He erected a stupendous life work of an
unheard of novelty and audacity; a surging wealth of passions
and visions."

A Novel
by
HENRY JAMES
Introduction
by
PHILIP
RAHV
THE BosTONIANS, first published in 1886, is Henry James'
longest and most ambitious novel on an American theme. It is
one of his best works, being a criticism of American society of the
1870's,
as
well as a story of love and morbid passion. It is among
the least known of James' novels because apart from the original
edition it has never before been reprinted in this country.
The story told by James in this advanced realistic novel was
too strong for the palate of the genteel reading-public of the
eighties, which was no doubt troubled by the hints of abnor–
mality in the relationship of Olive Chancellor, the strong-minded
Boston feminist, and Verena Tarrant, her beautiful young pro–
tegee.
