and see if you don't hear Diz say some–
thing.
That bit about tea being a heaven
or haven is further romanticising by
Broyard. Tea is indulged in with fel–
low initiates, fellow Knights of the
Joint, for pure enjoyment. There is
no dream-state similar to that of opium,
there is no sentimentality. What you
do have is a heightened sensibility to
stimulus, a heightened risibility. There
is now much to laugh at and the more
you laugh the more you want to laugh.
What a life!
That's all I have to say. Tell Broyard
to do some more observation and not
to let his pen get in the way of his
gaze. This topic is very interesting and
has much in it that should be explored.
Previous attempts have been inutile.
Incidentally, the best book on jive–
talk and one which offers a sound basis
as to its development is the one by
Dan Burley, it's called "Harlem Jive"
and it contains some great jive parodies
on some great and near-great things.
