Advances in medical technologies has revolutionized patient care. Unfortunately, in low-resource settings there are many barriers to translating life-saving advances to patients who need them the most. There is an enormous unmet need for appropriate technologies for these settings. This talk will focus on our efforts to development two point-of-care technologies to address unmet medical challenges. First, a high-resolution microendoscope system for improving cervical cancer diagnosis by providing real-time in vivo histological information to clinicians. Second, a low-cost lateral flow diagnostic for measuring total bilirubin concentration to enable accurate diagnosis and monitoring of neonatal jaundice. Both the technical innovation and how each device addresses an unmet clinical need in low-resource settings will be discussed.
