July 31: Helen’s Cookout
REUs were invited to enjoy a barbecue at Dr. Helen Fawcett’s home as the summer draws to a close! Our summer visitors had the opportunity to relax by the beach and enjoy each others’ company, as they are busy finalizing their projects and working on their posters for the upcoming poster session next Thursday, August 12th.
July 29: Ice Cream Truck
The REUs and RETs were able to enjoy some ice cream and networking during our annual summer ice cream truck meant to encourage conversation and get the researchers out of the lab. It was a welcome break in the nice weather a few weeks before the final poster sessions.
June 15 – 24: Clean Room
REUs were able to make custom gold wafers using a photolithography process within BU’s clean room. They were aided by former CELL-MET REU and current Photonics staff member, Francisco Sanchez. The process took a full day, in which the REUs learned about clean room lab practices and studies. They can be found with their wafers in the gallery below:
June 12: Freedom Trail
This Saturday, REUs gathered at Boston Common to walk through the Freedom Trail with led by Cell-Met’s own Helen Fawcett as the guide! Famous historical stops included the state house, Faneuil Hall, the Old North Church, and the USS Constitution. This was a great opportunity for the REUs to learn more about the city and each other.
June 11: First Check-In
The REU participants gathered to discuss their first week in the lab and the projects they are about to work on throughout the summer. Everyone was able to hear about the specific nuances the REU members will research as well as their lab’s goals for them.
