Printer FAQ
Server is always BUPHYK
buphyk.bu.edu is our print server, which functions via the LPD/LPR print service. You must add the printer via buphyk, which also allows us to keep track of print quotas. In the dialogs below, the server name is always going to be buphyk.bu.edu
Queue name
The queue name is what is printed on the label of the printer itself; for example, sci1-duplex is the duplex queue name for SCI1. You can add multiple versions for the same printer, or in the case of duplex printing, just add the -duplex option and then toggle whether you want duplexing at the time of printing.
Via Windows
LPR is not installed by default in Windows, so you will need to modify your list of Windows Add-Ons in the Control Panel to enable LPR printing. Once this is enabled, you will need to create a “local” port for each printer using this protocol.
You can install drivers specific to the desired printer, or you can install the HP Universal Printer Driver. We generally recommend the PCL6 driver, though any should work as well.
Via OS X
When you add a network printer, specify that you are adding an LPD style printer, and you can then use a Generic PostScript Driver.
