Fall 2023 Field Trip to Nantucket, MA

Our Fall 2023 Preservation Studies Field Trip was an exploration of a range of heritage and preservation activities in Nantucket, MA. A background to the island’s history and evolution of preservation was provided by Hillary Hedges Rayport. An introduction to the work of Nantucket Preservation Trust was given to the group by Rita Carr, Deputy Director, which included a walking tour of Main Street. The group also toured the family home of Hillary Hedges Rayport on Main Street, followed by a tour of the Oldest House and its grounds to discuss structure as well as themes in preservation, with Niles Parker, Executive Director Nantucket Historical Association. We were able to visit the Pacific Club with Board Member Ginger Andrews, who provided an introduction to the layers of building history, social history, and uses. The trip also included a glimpse of the Whaling Museum, Nantucket Historical Association.
