Appointment of Advisory Committees to Assist in the Formation of the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer

In announcing the appointment of Professor Azer Bestavros as Boston University’s inaugural Associate Provost for Computing & Data Sciences, I indicated that, as a next step, I would appoint three advisory committees to develop recommendations to guide the formation of the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences.

These committees will provide recommendations on key policy and strategy questions for the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences in the following areas:

  1. Hiring, promotion, and tenure review of faculty members jointly appointed between the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences and our schools and colleges;
  2. Organization of curricula within the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences; and
  3. Consideration of the opportunity to add other programs or capacities into the new academic unit.

I am pleased to announce that these three advisory committees were appointed and charged in late November and are hard at work. I want to give special thanks to Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs Maureen O’Rourke and Professor of Computer Science Mark Crovella for agreeing to chair the first two committees.

The membership of the three committees is listed below; I want to thank each of the members for committing their time, energy, and expertise to this important new effort. I have asked the committees to submit their preliminary recommendations to me no later than February 28, 2020.

This is an exciting time at Boston University. The faculty, academic opportunities, and new capacities for innovation we will add through the Faculty for Computing & Data Sciences will greatly enhance our ability to lead in this growing and strategically important area. I look forward to sharing more details with you as the committees complete their work and we enter the next phase of this process.
