All-University Commencement

From Dr. Kenneth Lutchen, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer ad interim

The All-University Commencement scheduled for Sunday, May 19 at Nickerson Field is just about two weeks away.

If you plan to march in the academic procession at Commencement, I ask that you please submit the RSVP form. You should have received specific information regarding Commencement earlier this semester. Please remember that the faculty robing area is in Claflin Hall. The assembly area can be reached via the walkway adjacent to 985 Commonwealth Avenue; University marshals will be in place to assist you. More detailed information regarding Commencement can be found at www.bu.edu/commencement.

David Grann, acclaimed historical nonfiction author and award-winning journalist at The New Yorker magazine, will deliver Boston University’s 151st Commencement Address during the ceremony. Dr. Walter Earl Fluker, the Martin Luther King, Jr. professor emeritus of ethical leadership in the School of Theology, will deliver the Baccalaureate Address earlier in the day at Marsh Chapel. Both will be awarded honorary degrees during the Commencement ceremony.

Those also receiving honorary degrees are: Kenneth Feld, CEO of Feld Entertainment, BU trustee emeritus and philanthropist; and Claudia Goldin, the Harvard University Henry Lee Professor of Economics and the 2023 recipient of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economics in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

Finally, we will recognize the recipients of Boston University’s highest annual faculty honors, the Metcalf Cup and Prize and the Metcalf Awards for Excellence in Teaching. This year’s Metcalf Cup and Prize will be awarded to Yuri Corrigan, associate professor of Russian and comparative literature in the College of Arts & Sciences; while this year’s Metcalf Awards for Excellence in Teaching will be presented to Alexis Peri, associate professor of history in the College of Arts & Sciences, and Veronika Wirtz, professor of global health in the School of Public Health.

Your presence at Commencement is greatly appreciated by our graduates and their families and friends. I hope you will join us for what promises to be a wonderful ceremony.
