Appointment of Elise Morgan as Dean ad interim of the College of Engineering

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer

Earlier today, President Brown announced that College of Engineering Dean Kenneth Lutchen will serve as University provost and chief academic officer ad interim beginning July 1, 2023. I am pleased to announce that Elise Morgan, Maysarah K. Sukkar Professor of Engineering Design and Innovation, has agreed to serve as dean ad interim of the College of Engineering, effective July 1, 2023. Elise currently serves as associate dean for research and faculty development at the College of Engineering.

Elise has been a valued and respected member of the College of Engineering faculty since her arrival in 2003. Her primary professorial appointment is in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, with additional affiliations in the Division of Materials Science & Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering. She currently serves as founding director of the Center for Multiscale & Translational Mechanobiology. Elise conducts research in biomechanics and mechanobiology, focusing on the causes and potential treatments for diseases and conditions such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and impaired bone healing.

Among many awards and honors, Elise is an elected fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering and in 2015 was named to the 100 Inspiring Women in STEM list by INSIGHT into Diversity magazine. She has served as associate editor of the Journal of Biomechanics, a member of the board of directors of the Orthopaedic Research Society, and former chair of a National Institutes of Health study section.

Elise has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and nearly 12,000 citations (Google Scholar). She holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Elise’s experience and effectiveness as a leader at the College of Engineering, in combination with her extensive teaching and research portfolio, make her an ideal fit for dean ad interim during this period of transition. I want to thank Elise Morgan for the service and leadership she will provide in the academic year ahead.
