Dissidence and Self-Publishing in the Soviet Union

  • Starts: 12:30 pm on Thursday, April 6, 2017
  • Ends: 1:30 pm on Thursday, April 6, 2017
Join us for a discussion of samizdat, free culture, and censorship with Ann Komaromi, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto. Professor Komaromi will tell us about the Project for the Study of Dissidence and Samizdat, a digital project that has digitized, contextualized, and made available Soviet samizdat periodicals. Samizdat was the grassroots practice of reproducing and distributing censored and underground publications, which developed in the Soviet bloc after Stalin’s death. This event is part of a series of Open Meetups, monthly informal gatherings that will bring together members of the BU community to engage in issues of open access, open data, and open education.
