General Information

A key component of Boston University’s 2014 update to its Strategic Plan, Choosing to be Great, is the creation of a common and compelling vision for the general education of all undergraduate students, building on the University’s model that combines liberal arts and sciences and professional education. Included in this vision is a commitment to a residential undergraduate community that prepares BU graduates to be a positive force in the global society. This integrated vision forms the basis of a new University-wide general education program.

In November 2014, University Provost Jean Morrison appointed a Task Force on General Education, comprising distinguished faculty from across BU. Co-chaired by Elizabeth Loizeaux, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs, and Bruce Schulman, William E. Huntington Professor of History, the Task Force is charged with developing a coherent set of core knowledge, skills and habits of mind that will equip BU graduates to thrive in their personal, professional and civic lives. This will involve broad consultation with faculty, students, and staff, and exploration of the relevant literature on general education and of the practices of high-quality research universities with successful general education programs.
