Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry, Biology, and Health Sciences

As a budding faculty at Boston University (BU) School of Medicine, I developed and led as Scientific Director a new Transgenic/Knockout Research Core that served the whole institute, resulting in numerous discoveries and grant support. Later, as Professor, I served as principal investigator and subsequently a leader of a large NIH-funded program project in the field of cardiovascular biology, involving an array of collaborators. I also initiated and directed an NIH-funded T32 training program in cardiovascular biology, which benefited tens of trainees. Leading this program as well as training nearly 50 fellows in my own laboratory led to numerous discoveries at the interface of bone marrow stem cell and vascular biology. Entering my role as the selected founder and leader of a new Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research (ECIBR), there was no other such organization to mimic or replicate. I developed Affinity Research Collaboratives (ARCs) that cross disciplines and departments, with the goal of promoting interdisciplinary research and discovery, and developing new educational platforms. The success of the ECIBR led in 2015 to my invitation to found and lead a new BU Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Office (IBRO), based at the office of BU Associate Provost for research. Since 2019 I serve as the elected president of the Massachusetts Academy of Sciences (summary date: 3.25.2022).
