Michael O’Mara Shimek is a Full Time Lecturer and ESL Specialist in BU’s College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program.
Dr. O’Mara Shimek’s research is centered on the role of metaphor and metonymy in the rhetoric of online stock market news reporting and its relationship to core standards of online journalism ethics. He has researched the ideological use of metaphor ontology by the financial media in the stock market crash of 2008 to promote and frame crisis response policies and has published in the areas of Discourse Analysis, Business Ethics and Journalism in journals such as Discourse & Communication, Business Ethics: A European Review, and Journal of Applied Journalism & Media Studies among others. He is currently working on a model for exploring the ethical quality of metaphor and metonymy in financial news reporting.
In 2011, he was appointed Sworn Translator and Interpreter of English by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
