Samuel Engel

Lecturer, Marketing

I have been a management consultant, business leader and teacher for almost 30 years. As a consultant to airlines and investors, I untangle complicated questions rooted in the economics of marketing, such as route optimization, sales strategy, and aircraft selection. In the boardroom, I lead stakeholders through complex decisions that enable action on organizational change. In the courtroom, I testify on the economics of airline strategy, supporting multi-million-dollar damages awards.

My philosophy inside and outside the classroom is that most business decisions are multidimensional. Even when we lead with marketing analytics, the concerns of strategy, finance and human behavior are never remote. In my courses, I teach students first how to master the tools of marketing analytics, and then how to apply them in the real-world context, with all its complexity and messiness. The most effective leaders are able to simplify problems down to a core analysis, and then layer on considerations of strategy, finance and operations.

Mirroring the business world facing our students, I have always worked across borders. Following college at Penn, I lived in Hungary, consulting with clients in what were then considered “emerging” markets in Eastern Europe. During and after my MBA at Yale, I worked with airlines in every other part of the world, including lengthy stints in the Middle East, Europe and Latin America. I am sensitive to observing and adapting to differences among management and customer cultures.
