Undergraduate Talk: Monster Theory: From Humbaba to Creepy Pasta

Sherry C.M. Lindquist will deliver an undergraduate talk while on campus to present the Religion Department Annual Lecture.

“Monster Theory: From Humbaba to Creepy Pasta” addresses the monsters that define us. No human culture has been without its monsters. Monsters express things beyond themselves: sometimes concrete things or persons, sometimes abstract concepts, emotions, philosophies, or ideologies. Monsters stimulate the imagination and make us think productively about the unknown and uncontrollable. But notions of the monstrous also figure into attempts to shut down debate and stigmatize others. What theories can help us grapple with and reflect on our relationship to monsters in history, literature, visual art, and in our present moment?

The talk will take place on March 5th at 11 AM. Room 206, Photonics Building. Space will be limited at this event.
