The Global Housing Crisis: Lessons on Displacement, Affordability, and Homelessness
Co-hosted by the BU Initiative on Cities
In August 2023, the United Nations published a new report warning of an unsustainable affordable housing crisis, reaffirming their commitment to housing as a human right. This housing crisis is global, and it’s directly affecting Boston, a city consistently ranked as having one of the most expensive housing markets in the US. View agenda and event slides.
Research conducted across Boston University shows that housing affordability has a profound impact on various aspects of life, including health, education, and social and economic mobility, and intersects with every dimension of identity including race, gender, and age. This event will convene experts across disciplines to explore the effects of housing unaffordability, including displacement and homelessness.

The Research on Tap series, sponsored by the BU Office of Research, brings together groups of BU researchers around important topics. At each event, 10-12 researchers present a maximum of four slides and deliver a four-minute “elevator pitch” of their work. Research on Tap events are open to faculty, staff, postdocs, and graduate students. Each presentation is followed by refreshments and lively discussion with colleagues and potential collaborators.
