Limited Submission Opportunity: The Mathers Charitable Foundation Research Grants

OBJECTIVES:

To support innovative, high-risk high-reward basic science and translational research. The foundation will fund research in areas such as immunology, microbiome, genomics, structural biology, cellular physiology, and neuroscience. The foundation will not fund work related to Covid-19, imaging technology development, electrical engineering technology development, research conducted in human subjects and will not fund requests for clinical trials or drug discovery or research projects it considers pre-clinical drug development. Preference will be given to research that has not been federally supported.

 

FUNDING INFORMATION:

Up to $750,000 over three years (including 10% IDC). The Foundation’s grant award is not intended to be utilized for purchasing capital equipment (“bricks and mortar”) for the lab and is intended only to support the actual investigation. The maximum allowed for equipment is $5,000. The Foundation assumes and expects that capital equipment must be provided by the research institution or university.

 

ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS:

Institutions may submit no more than 4 applications per cycle.

Collaborative research projects with other US based organizations are acceptable. Research collaborations between US based organizations and organizations based outside the US are not encouraged and will be given lower priority. Funds can only be awarded to US based research institutions that directly support investigators; no grants will be made to third party organizations.

 

INTERNAL SELECTION PROCESS:

Interested investigators should submit the following materials via InfoReady Review by DATE: 2/22/2024

  • Questions outlined in InfoReady Review application;
  • A concise summary of the proposed research project (up to 3 pages) that includes a preliminary set of aims, a discussion of previous or related work, and a summary of impactful discoveries;
  • A brief budget estimate (for 3 years);
  • Up-to-date CV or biosketch for the proposed nominee.

A faculty committee drawn from both campuses will review internal proposals and select nominees.
