Aquatic Species Zoonoses

Although the risk of infection from marine life is remote, it is recommended that special care be taken when handling these animals, their habitats, and equipment.

Recommended Preventative Measures

  • Approved gloves, and outer clothing, such as a lab coat or surgical gown, should be worn at all times when working with aquatic species or coming in contact with tank water.
  • Use a net to handle animals whenever it is feasible.
  • Wash hands after handling animals.
  • When seeking medical advice for any illness, inform your physician that you work with aquatic species.

The following symptoms may be related to aquarium-related exposures:

GI Upset

Fever

Skin Lesions

Cellulitis

Spontaneous Abortion
