Surface Warfare Officer (Information Professional)

The minimum requirement for this option is a Baccalaureate Degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics or Physical Science. Evidence of academic excellence is required. In general applicants should have a “B” average or above with a class standing in the top 25% of the graduating class.

Officers will be redesignated in the restricted line designated 16XX upon completion of Surface Warfare qualification, and completion of, as a minimum, one 2-year sea tour.

Midshipmen selected for this option may elect not to redesignated into the 160X community, but remain in the Surface Warfare community after they attain warfare qualification.

Upon redesignation to 16XX, officers incur a minimum service obligation of 2 years from the date of designator change, to be served concurrently with any other obligations.

Air Force ROTC : Boston College, Brandeis University, Bridgewater State University, Emmanuel College, Northeastern University, Simmons University, Suffolk University, University of Massachusetts at Boston, & Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Army ROTC: Babson College, Bentley University, Brandeis University, Bridgewater State University, Curry College, Fisher College, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Stonehill College, & University of Massachusetts at Boston. (In May 2024, the U.S. Army Cadet Command elevated the Massachusetts Maritime Academy to satellite status in our partnership, which means Army ROTC will be providing two cadre members who will be assigned full-time to the MMA campus at a future date.)
Navy/Marine Corps ROTC: Boston College & Northeastern University, with MIT, Harvard University, & Tufts University also falling under BU Navy/Marine Corps ROTC command, but with separate facilities.
