Romance Studies Hosts Conference on Disabilities & Second Language Learning

This past weekend, the Romance Studies Department hosted the 6th Annual Second-Language Learning & Disabilities Conference, organized by María Datel (Master Lecturer in Spanish at BU) and Elena Carrión Guerrero (Tufts University).

Edgardo Tormos, a lecturer in Spanish at BU Romance Studies, presented at the conference and had this to say about the experience:

“I am humbled, and I am also grateful for my colleagues. This is not your run-of-the-mill academic conference. It is a truly unique encounter of educators committed to accessible and inclusive language pedagogy. I loved every second, from learning about the cutting-edge research of keynote speaker Olivier Leguen on Yucatec Maya Sign Language, to learning from a diverse pool of educators on how to make the language classroom a nucleus for social justice.

Thank you co-organizers María Datel (Boston University) and Elena Carrión Guerrero (Tufts University), you have done it again!”

Multiple people from the BU Romance Studies community spoke at the conference, including:

  • Master Lecturer in Spanish María Datel (Conference Co-Organizer and Panelist) Panel: “Cultural Literacy: Indigenous Perspectives and Disability Discussions in Second- Language Classrooms”
  • Lecturer in Spanish Carmen Torre (Panelist) Panel: “Towards Universal Design: Tools for Creating Inclusive Digital Content”
