Syracuse University Colloquium

The French Department at Syracuse University and its Graduate Students are honored to announce a call for papers for our upcoming colloquium, “Theater and Cinema: Staging Challenges in the Francophone World,” to be held on April 11, 2024. This event will gather scholars to delve into the complex relationships between theater and cinema, with a focus on space, voice, and language as central elements of staging in the French-speaking world.

We would be truly honored if you might consider joining us as a speaker for this colloquium, sharing your valuable insights with our academic community. Alternatively, if you feel that this call might resonate with colleagues or students, we would greatly appreciate your sharing it with them.

Colloquium Themes:

This year’s colloquium invites reflections on staging in both theater and film as a means of expression, mediation, and transformation, with possible topics including:

– Space, Voice, and Language: How do spatial arrangements, voice modulation, and language shape both theater and film?

– Architectural Influence: The impact of physical spaces on performance, including historical and modern theater and cinema architecture.

– Classical and Modern Influences: Contemporary interpretations of Greco-Roman tragedy in French theater and cinema, and the resonance of ancient themes today.

In addition to academic panels, the event will feature live student performances, a musical presentation of French film scores with video accompaniment, a visual art exhibit, and student poster presentations.

Submission Guidelines:

If you or someone you know would be interested in presenting, please submit a 300-word abstract by January 20, 2025. Include a title, your name, institution, contact information, and a brief bio (max. 100 words). Presentations should be approximately 15 minutes and may be delivered in French or English.

We hope you will consider participating in this exploration of theater and cinema or sharing this invitation with your colleagues and students. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Warm regards,
