Background

Dr. Angelica Avcikurt, a native from San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a Senior Lecturer in Spanish. Angelica has been teaching at BU for the past 25 years. She has served as course head for LS 111, 211 and the Reading and Translation sequence. In 2016 she taught at the Study Abroad program in Madrid.  She is passionate about teaching languages.

Angelica has developed several 300-level courses: LS 307 Puerto Rican Language and Culture, LS 307 Mysteries, Miracles and Religion, and LS 306 Spanish through Translation. As a linguist, she is interested in pragmatics and linguistic variation. Her doctoral research examines language change and death in the Judeo-Spanish speaking community in Istanbul. Her areas of special interest include socio-linguistics, theology, translation and the cultures of the Caribbean. She is also involved with First Gen Connect.
