Scholarly, Research, and/or Practice Interests

Naomi Caselli leads a research team that documents the structure of the American Sign Language lexicon, the effects of language deprivation on language acquisition, and developing AI-enabled sign language technology. She is a co-developer of ASL-LEX, an award-winning lexical database documenting the ASL lexicon. She also leads an NIH-funded investigation of how early language experience affects vocabulary acquisition. In a new line of work, she investigates the ethical and practical challenges in an emerging field of sign language computing. This work explores questions about privacy, fairness, ownership, and bias in sign language technologies.
