Clinical Faculty Scholarship Grant

Purpose
This award is designed to support excellence in scholarship among clinical faculty. Applications must propose a focused effort consistent with Sargent’s areas of clinical faculty scholarship as listed below under Project Objectives. Note that proposals for Teaching/Learning that involve course development rather than scholarship should be not be submitted here but rather to the Innovation in Teaching and Learning Grant program.
Fund
The Clinical Faculty Scholarship Grant awards up to $8,000 or one month of summer salary.
Eligibility
Clinical faculty and lecturers are eligible; applicants must have full-time primary appointments in Sargent College.
Application Requirements
- Project title and a targeted area of scholarship identified: Application/Practice; Teaching/Learning; Research/Discovery; or Integration/IPE
- A statement indicating whether IRB approval is required and/or pending
- Signature of your Department Chair
- A project proposal, not to exceed 5 single-spaced pages in 12-point font with 1-inch margins. This page limit includes Figures and Tables but excludes references.
- Summary: A short summary of the proposed project in lay terms (not to exceed 200 words).
- Project Objectives: Describe your overarching goal and how the proposed project relates to your goal
- Proposals for Application/Practice grants should identify the clinical challenge, the intended resolution, and a plan for dissemination.
- Proposals for Teaching/Learning should state a clear study question, describe the project population and methods, outline an analysis plan and expected outcomes, and identify a dissemination strategy.
- Proposals for Research/Discovery grants should state a testable hypothesis, define the study population, describe the research methods, specify an analysis plan and expected outcomes, and identify a dissemination strategy.
- Proposals for Integration/IPE grants should identify the opportunity to translate evidence into practice, including interprofessional practice.
- Background and Significance: Briefly develop the background leading to this proposal, critically evaluating relevant literature and identifying gaps that the project is intended to fill. Identify the significance of the project by stating how it relates to your overarching goal.
- Project Design and Methods: Briefly describe the project design and, if relevant, the methods you will use to accomplish the objectives of your project, including how the data will be collected, analyzed, and interpreted, and how your project will be evaluated. If relevant, describe any new methodology you will use and its advantage over existing methods. Discuss the overall feasibility of the project, identifying any anticipated challenges or limitations and describe plans to minimize difficulties. Include a timetable for the project to demonstrate its feasibility within a 12-month timeframe.
- Importance of the Project: Discuss the importance of the projected project outcome in the context of your own expertise and background. Describe how the project will contribute to your career development and/or professional advancement. Examples might include positioning yourself for promotion, professional recognition, publication(s), innovation, new collaborations, pilot work to compete for external funding, or other future opportunities. Include a brief description of your qualifications for conducting the proposed project.
- Literature cited: Include a reference list of all literature cited in the application (not counted toward the 5-page limit).
- Budget: Applicants may request one month of summer salary OR a maximum amount of $8,000. If requesting one month of summer salary, no budget justification is required. If requesting funds up to $8,000, acceptable expenses include items such as a portion of one month of summer salary support for you as the scholar (proportional to the $8,000 limit; i.e., 0.5 month salary = $4,000), equipment, supplies, study participant costs, data collection expenses, personnel, and project-related travel (e.g., for data collection or conference presentations). For each line item, please provide a brief justification. Funding requests are restricted to direct costs only. Funds should be used within the allocated 12-month funding period. Please prepare your budget in an Excel spreadsheet and submit separately.

Evaluation Criteria
Review of the Clinical Faculty Scholarship Grant applications will be based on the following criteria:
- Significance – potential clinical or scientific impact. Applications must explicitly address the intended project outcome and its potential to strengthen the applicant’s record of scholarship (i.e., with respect to promotion/advancing scholarly agenda).
- Design – adequacy of the research design and method(s) of the proposed work.
- Feasibility – feasibility of the proposed work within the funding period and budget, including evidence of available expertise and essential resources to carry out the proposed work. The application should include a clear timeline as part of an overall project plan.
- Applicant Qualifications – evidence of the applicant’s demonstrated experience, skills, and technical accomplishments.
- Clarity – degree of thought and thoroughness exhibited, with attention to the project’s alignment with the stated objectives and discussion of how this funding will aid in the applicant’s career development or professional advancement.
Expected Product/Outcomes
Awardees must submit a Final Status Report to Associate Dean for Research, Jana Iverson, by May 31 following the funding period. This report should include the intended scholarly product and an explanation for any unspent funds. Please explain any unspent funds and request a no-cost extension of up to 6 months for the funds as needed. Awarded funds cannot be reallocated during or after the proposed budget period.
