Who is this test best for?
Men with prostate cancer that may have spread to the lymph nodes or other organs in the body.
What to Expect
Some tests use a contrast dye. If a dye is used, men may have a blood test to check kidney health before the dye is injected. Men may be asked to drink a special liquid before the test. The patient lays on a table that moves in and out of a donut-shaped imaging machine.
Who orders or performs the test?
What are common side effects?
If a dye is used, the patient might have a metallic taste in his mouth or feel flushed after the exam. Patients can potentially have an allergic reaction to the dye, though serious complications like kidney failure are rare and often reversible. Patients who drink the liquid may experience diarrhea.
