Who is this test best for?

Men with prostate cancer that may have spread to the bladder.

What to Expect

For a cystoscopy done as an office procedure, a mild topical anesthetic like lidocaine may be applied. The urologist will insert a cystoscope, a thin tube outfitted with a light and tiny camera, through the urethra into the bladder, which is filled with water to make its walls visible. Using this device, the urologist will spot abnormalities and biopsy them.

If abnormalities are found, the doctor may recommend an operative cystoscopy, which is done under general anesthesia.
