Who is this test best for?

Liver function tests are helpful for men whose cancer has metastasized to the bone or liver.

What to Expect

Liver function tests are used to identify how well the liver is working. LFTs check for enzymes and proteins naturally produced by the liver. Part of the liver function panel usually includes the Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) test. ALP may be elevated when the liver is not working properly, but can also be elevated if prostate cancer has spread to the bones. If your ALP level is elevated, your doctor may do another blood test to determine if it is from your liver or your bones.

Men with metastatic cancer who are undergoing medical treatments can also benefit from LFTs. In addition to ALP, three other enzyme levels rise when the liver is damaged by treatment: alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and lactic dehydrogenase (LDH). Bilirubin, which is a component of digestive juice, may also become elevated.
