Percent-Free PSA is a measure of the percent of PSA in the blood that is floating freely compared to PSA that is attached to another protein. Different types of PSA tests may create a fuller picture of a patient’s condition prior to diagnosis.
Who is this test best for?
Men with higher than normal PSA levels who have not yet been diagnosed with prostate cancer. This test may produce fewer false positive results in men with PSA test results close to but above the normal range.
What to Expect
This test can be performed on a blood sample already taken for a standard PSA test. Men with lower percentages of freely floating PSA, called free PSA, are more likely to have elevated PSA levels because of cancer rather than some other form of inflammation. If your Percent-Free PSA is low, your doctor may recommend additional tests.
