Who is this treatment best for?

Men with small tumors that are contained within the prostate. Men with prostate cancer that has come back.

What to Expect

An anesthesiologist will provide general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia to numb the lower half of the body. Using ultrasound images for guidance throughout the procedure, the doctor inserts small probes through the perineum, between the scrotum and anus, into the prostate. Cold gases pass through the tubes into the prostate. The doctor watches the ultrasound to minimize freezing of healthy tissues. During the procedure, warm water is passed through a catheter in the urethra to protect it from damage. The catheter remains in place for several days during recovery. Some men stay overnight in the hospital after this procedure.

Nearly 100% of men who undergo cryotherapy experience some level of erectile dysfunction. Urinary incontinence is rare in men who have not had prior procedures, but occurs more commonly in men who have already had radiation. Fewer than 1% of patients develop rectal fistula, a hole between the bladder and rectum that requires surgery.
