Who is this treatment best for?

Men with small tumors that are contained within the prostate.

What to Expect

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound does not require surgical incisions and no overnight stay is needed. The patient will have an MRI in advance to help target the tumor location. During the procedure, an ultrasound probe is placed in the patient's rectum to deliver the high-intensity waves. A general anesthetic is used. Practitioners are also exploring HIFU performed during an MRI, which allows more precise targeting of the tumor. MRI can also provide a temperature measurement of the tissue involved, ensuring that as little damage as possible is done to healthy cells.
