Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) is a form of radiotherapy that focuses intense energy on a small, targeted area. It is also known by the brand name CyberKnife®. Despite this name, no incision is required. SBRT is an evolving therapy, so it’s not yet part of standard treatment in certain circumstances. It may be recommended for some patients under specific circumstances.

Who is this treatment best for?

Men considering radiotherapy for any risk level of prostate cancer (low, medium, or high).

What to Expect

Prior to SBRT, imaging helps doctors implant tiny gold markers in the prostate. During the procedure, these are used to target the cancer cells. The patient is positioned on the exam table and the SBRT machine rotates around them, administering the radiation. SBRT may be a shorter course of treatment than IMRT.

Who orders or performs the treatment?

What are common side effects?

SBRT may cause rectal (2% of patients) and urinary (5%) side effects to other forms of radiotherapy, but at a lower rate and generally less severe grade due to the precise targeting. Erectile dysfunction can also occur.
