Stereotactic Body RadiotherapyTreatment that uses ionizing radiation to kill cancer cells.... Full Definition (SBRT) is a form of radiotherapy that focuses intense energy on a small, targeted area. It is also known by the brand name CyberKnife®. Despite this name, no incision is required.
Who is this treatment best for?
Men considering radiotherapy for any risk level of prostate cancer (low, medium, or high). Patients with a cancer metastasis that is causing a symptom.
What to Expect
Prior to SBRT, imaging helps doctors implant tiny gold markers in the prostate. During the procedure, these are used to target the cancer cells. Patients getting SBRT for a metastatic spot may not need any markers placed. The patient is positioned on the exam table and the SBRT machine rotates around them, administering the radiation. SBRT may be a short course of treatment.
Who orders or performs the treatment?
What are common side effects?
SBRT to the prostate may cause rectal (2% of patients) and urinary (5%) side effects to other forms of radiotherapy, but at a lower rate and generally less severe grade due to the precise targeting. Side effects of SBRT to a metastasis would depend on where the radiation was being given in the body.
