Meet your Program Directors:

Nick Pfeifer, EdM, ATC

Nick is the Director of the Neurology Fellowship sand an Assistant Head Athletic Trainer at Boston University. Through his training and experience, Pfeifer has developed a clinical specialty in managing spine and neurological cases and collaborates with stakeholders across campus to oversee the department’s concussion related policies and procedures. His clinical philosophy is shaped by patient-centered care, goal setting, and data-driven decision making. As an educator he is passionate about supporting self-actualization, lifelong learning and curiosity. He delivers the quality improvement curriculum for both the Fellowship and Residency programs, as well as overseeing departmental quality improvement and assurance initiatives. Nick graduated from Kean University in 2013 with a BS degree in Athletic Training with a minor in Health Education. He then earned an EdM from Boston University in Health Education in 2015, followed by successful completion of the Neurotrauma and Spine Athletic Training Residency at Boston University in 2016. In his free time, Nick enjoys hiking and playing with Calvin, his Vizsla puppy, and dining around Boston with Leah, his wife.

Hollie Walusz, MA, ATC

Hollie currently serves as the Head Athletic Trainer for Boston University where she provides the complete spectrum of medical care for all student-athletes at the University and directs patient care and management of the sports medicine unit. She has served as the Director of Residency Programs since 2016 and remains the Residency Program Director for the accredited Orthopedics Residency in Athletic Training here at BU. She joined the Boston University staff in August 2012. Prior to that time, she has worked as an AT in the collegiate setting as well as within both the professional and international soccer environments. Hollie completed her professional education at the University of Northern Iowa in 2005 and earned a master’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007. Her areas of clinical specialty include orthopedic evaluation and intervention with a particular passion for complex orthopedic and neuropathic conditions, the lumbopelvic-hip region, and concussion evaluation and management. Additionally, she strives to provide clinical education, leadership development and mentoring that drives professional growth and improved clinical care/patient outcomes for the professional staff and professional and post professional learners. She currently serves as the Chair of the Residency and Fellowship Accreditation Council for the CAATE.

Meet your Core Faculty:

Emily Ford

Em Gibb , MA, ATC

Em is an Assistant Head Athletic Trainer who joined the BU Athletic Training staff in 2015. She holds degrees from Boston University (BS in Athletic Training; 2010) and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (MA in Exercise and Sport Science; 2012) as well as having successfully completed Boston University’s Orthopedic Residency (2016). A member of the faculty since 2016, her primary clinical areas of focus are acute diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal injury as well as long-term rehabilitation and intervention. She has experience working in an outpatient orthopedic clinic as well as in the collegiate environment. Her faculty focus areas include development and execution of the standardized patient curriculum as well as instruction and facilitation of literary-based learning activities. She has a curated passion for mentorship of clinical learners of all levels and background.

Erica Peterson, PT, DPT, ATC

Erica is in her 3rd year as a member of the residency faculty. She attended Boston University for her undergraduate degree in Athletic Training and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. Her primary didactic content area is coordinating Labs for hands-on practice of skills indicated for clinical specialists. Prior to working at BU, she worked as a Physical Therapist in a variety of settings including outpatient pediatrics, school-based PT, and skilled nursing facilities as well as per diem AT coverage for middle school, high school, and collegiate athletes across eastern Massachusetts. Her areas of interest are the shoulder with an emphasis on post-surgical rehabilitation and return to throwing programs in the school-age and collegiate populations and health promotion across the lifespan.

Matt Weintrob, PT, DPT, ATC

Matt joined as a faculty member of the programs in 2022. He attended Boston University for both his undergraduate and graduate education, graduating with a BS in Athletic Training and a Doctor of Physical Therapy. His primary didactic content area is Grand Rounds presentations. Matt also provides hands-on mentorship within the lab curriculum and creates educational content focusing on the neck and head. Prior to BU, Matt worked as a physical therapist in the outpatient setting, providing care to a broad spectrum of patients with a variety of orthopedic, post-operative, and neurological conditions. His clinical interests include the spine, upper extremity, movement analysis, and rehabilitation and performance.

Meet your Affiliate Faculty:

Arturo Aguilar, MD

Dr. Aguilar serves as the Director of Sports Medicine at Boston University. Arturo completed his undergraduate degree at University of Arizona where he graduated Cum Laude and then attended medical school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tn. In medical school he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and graduated with a High Honors Graduate Award. He completed residency at New Hampshire Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency and received the Resident of the Year award from the New Hampshire Academy of Family Physicians. He then completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship at Boston University. After graduation from sports medicine fellowship in 2010 he remained on as faculty teaching in his fellowship before traveling and working overseas in rural New Zealand, Tonga, and the Dominican Republic in a medical mission capacity. He currently remains interested and active in overseas medical mission projects and serving in his local community church. At Boston University, Arturo provides care to the varsity and club athletes and serves as Medical Director of the Athletic Training Residency program in Orthopedics and the Athletic Training Fellowship program in Neurology. Arturo has special interest in ultrasound guided musculoskeletal procedures and diagnostics, viscosupplementation, platelet rich plasma therapy, and non-surgical fracture management. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine serving on the International/Inter-Organizational Relations Committee and the Practice and Policy Committee. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine with a CAQ in Sports Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Nathan Cardoos

Nathan Cardoos, MD

Nathan is a Family Physician and Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Cardoos attended the University of Chicago, where he earned his degree in medicine. He completed his residency in family medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance. He continued his training by completing a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Cardoos is the medical director of the Ryan Center for Sports Medicine, director of the Boston University Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, and head team physician at Boston University. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. He is Registered in Musculoskeletal Sonography by the Alliance for Physician Certification & Advancement. He is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine and serves on the education and fellowship committees. He has special interests in diagnostic and therapeutic sports ultrasound and concussion

 

Richard Galgano

Richard Galgano, DO

Rich is an internist who trained at the University of New England, College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a rotating internship in Rhode Island followed by 4 years of medical residency at St Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston. Rich is the director of primary care at BUSHS. He’s certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr Galgano’s interests including medical care of athletes, medical and patient education, manual (Osteopathic) management of sport-related conditions, and coaching youth track and field.

 

Justin Young, DAT, LAT, ATC

Justin currently works with the Doctorate in Athletic Training and Masters of Athletic Training programs at Indiana State University while pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Instruction, and Media Technology with a focus in Athletic Training education. Justin completed his professional education at Northern Michigan University in 2017, earned a post-professional master’s degree from Missouri State University in 2019, and earned his Doctorate in Athletic Training from Indiana State University in 2021. In his current role, he teaches courses on Health Informatics and Quality Improvement, Applied Physiology for Patient Care, and Contemporary Leadership. He also facilitates courses related to integrative health, manual therapy, outcome measures, quality improvement, and healthcare administration, develops and trains standardized patients, and assists with student research and scholarship. His areas of research interest are related to the vitality of the athletic training profession including psychological ownership in the profession, clinical leadership behaviors, transition to practice, professional and post-professional athletic training education, and interprofessional collaboration. In addition to his role at Indiana State, he serves as a member of Residency and Fellowship Standards Committee for the CAATE and as a member of the Interprofessional and Collaborative Practice Research Group for the AATE.
