106672_Olanoff, Rachel_0014 (1)In keeping with recent tradition, the Sociology Department will again welcome a “ten year out” alumna as our commencement speaker.  Officer Rachel McGuire (nee Olanoff) (BA, ’04) will return to Boston University to address the 2014 graduating seniors and their families.

A brief bio on our guest speaker:

Police Officer Rachel O. McGuire graduated from Boston University’s College of Arts and Sciences in May 2004 with Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Psychology and Sociology. After four years in retail sales at JCrew in Copley Square, Officer McGuire applied to become a Boston Police Officer. She was accepted and graduated the 6-month Boston Police Academy in November 2008 at the top of her class, receiving the academy’s Hogan Award and Academic Excellence Award. For the first five and a half years of her police career, Officer McGuire patrolled the streets of District D-4, covering the Back Bay, South End, Fenway, and Lower Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston. While working as a patrol officer, she studied at Curry College and earned her Masters Degree in Criminal Justice in 2012.  Her education at B.U. and Curry, her time in retail sales, and her experiences as a patrol officer prepared her for her recently acquired position as a spokesperson and representative for the Boston Police Department in the Office of Media Relations.  Officer McGuire is currently studying for the upcoming promotional exam in hopes of becoming a sergeant.

The 2014 Sociology Commencement will be held at 9AM on Sunday, May 18th at the School of Management Auditorium.
