CDS DS291: Exploring DEI in Tech

Spring 2024: Fridays from 10:10 AM – 11:55 PM*

In this 2-credit workshop, you will explore topics related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) in the tech sector. This workshop implements the theory of practice of DEIJ across the technology sector, allowing you to gain a foundational understanding of key concepts like intersectionality, inclusive dialogue, and how to initiate DEIJ efforts in your communities. You will apply this framework to better understand issues of DEIJ in the tech sector, academia, business, and other domains from AI to hardware. You will complete a final project using an intersectional lens to asses a problem you’re passionate about and develop solutions.

 

Learning outcomes

You will have an understanding of issues associated with diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice in technology, and equipped to be able to proactively engage as advocates and disruptors of the adverse effects of inequity throughout your academic and professional journeys. By the end of the semester you will be able to:

  1. Understand intersectionality in the context of the computer science and software sector and identify why DEIJ is critical training for future professionals in academia, the private sector, and government. 
  2. Practice and implement advocacy tactics aimed at shifting cultures and practices including allyship, co-conspirators, leadership, and more on an intersectional and holistic understanding of DEIJ and technology.
