Spotlight on Obesity: Dec. 3 Film Screening of ‘Weight of the Nation”.
As part of the Spotlight on Obesity initiative, the BUSPH Practice Office is sponsoring a screening of Weight of the Nation: Challenges, a segment of the award-winning documentary series created by HBO and the Institute of Medicine.
The “Challenges” segment of the acclaimed four-part series examines the major driving forces of the obesity epidemic, including agriculture, economics, evolutionary biology, food marketing, racial and socioeconomic disparities, physical inactivity, American food culture, and the strong influence of the food and beverage industry.
After the screening, Jacey Greece, a clinical assistant professor of epidemiology and community health sciences; and Craig Andrade, director of community health, Division of Prevention & Wellness, Mass DPH, will lead a discussion about the obesity epidemic and how community-based interventions can help turn the tide.
“Spotlight on Obesity” is a two-year school-wide initiative to examine the national obesity epidemic from a public health perspective. This extensive interdisciplinary approach to an emerging public health problem will incorporate academic, research and community engagement to enable students to explore many of the complex legislative, environmental, social, behavioral and economic issues that influence obesity.
