Dear Colleagues:

I am pleased to announce that David Jernigan joined the Department of Health Law, Policy & Management on April 2. His record as an award-winning teacher, his research and receipt of external funding, his commitment to research translation, and his international reputation as an advocate for public health will all be a great boon to SPH.

Jernigan received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. He comes to us from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he was an associate professor in the Department of Health, Behavior, and Society and director of the Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth. Jernigan’s career at the Bloomberg School was noteworthy for his broad experience working on alcohol issues at high levels in international settings. He has served as an expert advisor to the World Health Organization for more than two decades, advising on alcohol policy and the role of alcohol in the global burden of disease.

Jernigan is best known for his action-research approach to the issue of alcohol advertising, marketing, and promotion and its influence on young people. His work has led to better advertising regulations and a clearer understanding of the evolving structure of the alcohol industry. His work is policy relevant and scientifically rigorous. Importantly, Jernigan has been very active in translating research findings into policy and practice. He testifies regularly at city, state, and national levels around alcohol advertising and youth, alcohol availability, and taxation. He also trains advocates around the world using the best evidence.

Jernigan has pressed social issues with the force of public health science. It will be good to have him among us. Email him greetings, visit him at his office in Talbot 337W, or be in touch by phone at 617-358-2717.

Best,

Michael
